Alastair Majury on Community Payback Offenders to Help Maintain War Graves

Stirling Observer Coverage of the work

People given Community Payback Orders will now be doing work to help maintain the over 250 Commonwealth War Graves that are in the Stirling Council area.

This comes after Dunblane and Bridge of Allan Councillor Alastair Majury raised this possibility and discussed it with the Stirling Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland.

The work will be done in accordance with the Commonwealth War GravesCommission guidance on maintaining cemeteries and memorials. The commission adopts a conservation approach to caring for our headstones. Headstones should be upright, clean, and inscriptions should be legible at reasonable light levels and viewing distances. On average the headstones are cleaned every two to three years but more often if necessary.

This will be a task that will be performed in addition to the current work being carried out by these teams. The project commenced with the six graves located in Dunblane Cemetery.

A list of graves was compiled from the Commonwealth War Graves database. This revealed that the actual number of graves in the Stirling area is over 250. This will therefore be a sizeable undertaking and it is hoped it may set a precedent for other Local Authorities to follow.

Roy McAlister Chair, Stirling Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland Said:

Cllr Majury approached us with this suggestion. We thought it an excellent idea as a lot of these graves may not have had any maintenance for many years. As well as a very useful task we hope those involved may reflect on the sacrifice that those individuals made so that we could live in peace and enjoy life as it is to-day. IT is an excellent tribute to the memory of our fallen comrades.

Dunblane and Bridge of Allan Councillor Alastair Majury Said:

“The idea occurred to me when I was involved in addressing a residents concerns about upkeep at the Dunblane cemetery. Conversations followed with the British Legion and then Council Officers who responded very promptly. IT felt like the right type of project for those involved in the Payback Scheme and I hope they will find it rewarding to be carrying out such an important job on behalf of the community.
