Cllr Alastair Majury SNP’s Significant Cuts to Local Government Budgets

The above graph shows that the SNP led Scottish Government does not value the services that local councils provide, and hence have significantly cut our funding.

If funding from the Scottish Government to Local Government had been cut by 1.65%, then the SNP, et al could complain about ‘Tory Austerity’, however as the cuts are significantly greater at 6.92% for the same period, it is clear that cuts to Local Government services are due to SNP led Scottish Government austerity.

Plus SNP led Scottish Government underspends of around £450M per year, if divided equally amongst councils would provide approximately an extra £14M to spend per year.

COSLA has also described its position on the flexibility of councils’ budgets. It has taken a different and wider approach to this. It focuses on estimated expenditure. It identifies expenditure areas that have been ring-fenced or are protected through obligations created by current and past Scottish Government policy initiatives, demand pressures, or fixed obligations such as loan charges.

In its response to the Local Government and Communities Committee on the 2019/20 budget, COSLA’s view is that Scottish Government policies and fixed commitments represented 58 per cent of local government revenue expenditure budgets in 2018/19; 60 per cent in 2019/20.
