Councillor Alastair Majury on Stirling Council Next Steps In Climate Emergency

After Stirling Council declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency at October’s meeting, the council have confirmed some of the additional steps that they are taking to reduce the council’s impact on the environment. After a request by Dunblane and Bridge of Allan Councillor Alastair Majury to consider alternatives, the council has eliminated the use of single use plastic teaspoons from all primary schools, and have removed the option to purchase plastic teaspoons.

Stirling Council will also trial an alternative to single use ketchup sachets, as children are given a measured sachet of sauce portion on request when fries are on the menu. This sachet complies with the council’s food for life silver standard and nutritional guidance. Instead of a single use sachet, the council will trial using a sauce pump and small paper sauce cups for distributing sauce to children. The trial will be run for one menu cycle at a couple of large primary schools in order to allow the council to understand if this alternative is cost effective.

Dunblane and Bridge of Allan Councillor Alastair Majury said:

“A resident contacted me who was concerned about the use of single use plastic spoons and sauce sachets at Newton Primary School. I am grateful that council officers have responded positively to my request. If people have ideas as to how the council can be more sustainable please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Alastair Majury resides locally in the historic Scottish city of Dunblane, and is a Senior Regulatory Business Analyst working across the country. Alastair Majury also serves on the local council (Stirling Council) as Councillor Alastair Majury where he represents the ward of Dunblane and Bridge of Allan, topping the poll.
